Whether you're replacing a dryer or trying to decide if a repair is worth it, the fuel type matters more than most people expect. Here's what actually differs between gas and electric dryer repairs, based on what we see in Chicago homes every week.

Where electric dryers cost more

Electric dryers rely on a heating element that draws significant current and burns out over time — typically the most common electric dryer repair we perform. Elements themselves are inexpensive, but labor to access and replace them can add up depending on the model's cabinet design.

Where gas dryers cost more

Gas dryers add an igniter, gas valve, and flame sensor to the mix — components electric dryers simply don't have. When these fail, parts and labor both tend to run slightly higher than an equivalent electric dryer repair, and any gas-related work requires a technician licensed to safely handle gas appliances.

The shared cost driver: vent restriction

Regardless of fuel type, the most common — and most preventable — dryer problem we see is restricted airflow from a clogged vent line. This causes long dry times, thermal fuse trips, and in serious cases, fire risk. Annual vent cleaning is the single best thing you can do to avoid a service call altogether.

So which is actually cheaper?

Over the life of the appliance, electric dryers tend to have marginally lower average repair costs simply because they have fewer components that can fail. But the difference is smaller than most people assume, and vent maintenance matters more than fuel type for either one.
